Al-Andalus:
what we carry forward.
A selection from the historical base of the project. Each item states what the evidence supports and what Safira takes from it. The full document distinguishes evidence, attribution and contemporary proposal.
Knowledge that crossed borders
In tenth-century Córdoba, a Greek manuscript of Dioscorides was studied by physicians of different faiths, among them Hasday ibn Shaprut, with the help of a Byzantine monk. The library of al-Hakam II became famous across the Mediterranean; its exact size remains unverified.
At SafiraA library, conversation and a cultural life of its own inside the estate.
Water before the palace
The Acequia Real, promoted in the thirteenth century, brought water from the Darro to the Generalife and the Alhambra. In the Sierra Nevada, careo channels documented from the eleventh century guide snowmelt into the ground to feed springs in the dry season.
At SafiraLandscape and water designed before the buildings.
The house turned inward
Bent entrances protected courtyards from the street; in the Court of the Myrtles, the pool doubles the light and the apparent depth of the façade.
At SafiraPrivacy by design: distance, composed views, water and shade.
A commission with a name and a date
The ivory pyxis of al-Mughira, from Madinat al-Zahra, bears its recipient and the year 968.
At SafiraCraft commissioned for each house and signed by its maker.
Coexistence, with its complexity
Al-Andalus offers real examples of exchange between Muslims, Jews and Christians. That coexistence was variable and unequal, and depended on period and power.
At SafiraCultivating respect between people and cultures is a choice Safira makes today.
